Kenya at the Crossroads

Scenarios for our future

An initiative of the Society for International Development and the Institute of Economic Affairs

Who shapes Kenya's future?
What do you think Kenya will be like in the year 2010? What about 2020? Nobody really knows, but we often try to imagine what it could be like. Yet Kenyans rarely come together as a people to think about what future they might face.
Between 1998 and early 2000, a group of over 80 Kenyans representing different generations and backgrounds met to reflect on the future of the country. Their reflections are summarized in
four scenarios which depict alternative futures that could evolve and what they would mean for the country.
This web site brings together their experience.

Current Results
Two main messages emerge from the project:
1) Kenya has pretty much reached the limits of its current economic and institutional models and foundations. It is therefore necessary for the country to undertake fundamental reforms. Tinkering and quick fixes are unlikely to hold out for very long.
2) A successful and prosperous outcome for Kenya is still possible, though no quick fixes should be expected. Such outcome can only come about through radical reorganization and great sacrifices by all Kenyans. Radical changes to revive the economy, a comprehensive reorganization of Kenya's primary institutions, models of governance and relationships between citizenry and the government are all required. However, change will not come without pain and at no cost.
